Fishing: An on-site stream provides a great fishing spot for you anglers.

Greenwood Furnace State Park

Greenwood Furnace State Park provides a look into the historic industrial past of north Huntingdon county as well as recreational opportunities.   A walking tour passes through the remains of Greenwood Furnace, providing park visitors with a lesson about the history of the town that once surrounded the ironworks and includes a blacksmith shop that holds demonstrations during the weekends.  Greenwood Lake provides a great place to cool off and fish in the summer months.  A series of  short hiking trails run throughout the park and also link to much longer backpacking trails; connecting to the Appalachian Trail.

Local Hiking: Greenwood Furnace State Park is also a trail head for two much longer backpacking trails that pass through the Appalachian Mountains of Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Mid State Trail is a 522.6-kilometer (324.7 mi) trail that runs from the Maryland state line to the New York state line near Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania and connects to the park via the Greenwood Spur. The Standing Stone Trail is a 72-mile (116 km) backpacking trail that connects the park to the Tuscarora Trail, which in turn connects with the Appalachian Trail.

Whipple Lake

Whipple Lake is open to fishing, boating, and swimming. The lake is stocked by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission with trout. Gas-powered boats are prohibited on Whipple Lake. Electric powered boats and non powered boats must have current registration with any state. The sand beach open Memorial Day weekend and closes Labor Day weekend. The lake provides a habitat for a wide variety of waterfowl as well as Great Blue Heron & Osprey.

Bald Eagle State Forest

Bald Eagle State Forest includes over 200,000 acres and hundreds of miles of stunningly beautiful backroads and trails that lead to streams, scenic vistas and 70 remote campsites calling your name. Explore miles and miles of hiking trails, dual sport motorcycle trails, mountain bike trails, and equestrian trails. There are four wheel drive trails, dual sport motorcycle trails and trails for non-street legal motorcycles and ATVs. Bald Eagle State Forest is also home to the famous Penns Creek and White Deer Creek fly fishing creeks. You’re gonna need more time.

Lizard Raystown

There is so much to do in the Raystown Lake region that you need a really big map to fully comprehend all your options. The lake is 28 miles long and 200 feet deep….get in your boat and go! The world class Allegrippis mountain bike trail system are purpose built, machine cut trails that flow and flow and flow until you just can’t take it anymore. The Terrace Mountain Trail is a remote footpath along the entire eastern edge of the lake. Trough Creek State Park has dozens of trails plus all the trails and dirt roads within Rothrock State Forest and State Gamelands.  Massive networks of scenic back roads connect all these places, which really means one thing: you’ll need a few more days.

Rothrock State Forest has an extremely well developed trail system that makes it perfect for exploring by foot or bike. The Mid State Trail traverses ridgetops and valleys for long, quiet walks in the woods. Several of the most popular and sought out mountain bike trails on the east coast run along various ridges and in and out of gaps, all linked together by a network of dirt and gravel roads.  That is one of many reasons world-class races are held here, and people can enjoy riding or running the racecourse routes year round.
